Course overview
Course description
Victorian Britain was a vibrant and advanced society, but is much misunderstood. Who were the Victorians and what did they think of the world they lived in?
The Britain of the nineteenth century was a complex and exciting place, which we will explore on this course. What did it really mean to work in the Victorian Factories and what did the Trade Unions have to do with welfare and safety? Did the advent of the railways change anything and if so, how did they impact upon daily life?
It has often been claimed that the workers was exploited and all lived in slums, but is this really what happened? How did Victorian actors and music hall artists become national and global celebrities and what role did the media have to play in Britain?
