Course overview
Course description
This course examines the economic and political events that affected Germany between 1918 and 1933 which allowed the Nazis to come to power. The development and structure of the Nazi Party and its variable messages to different groups in German society are considered as well as the role of Adolf Hitler, other leading Nazis and the Nazi Propaganda machine which enabled them to develop huge support in Germany by 1930. Political intrigue and President Hindenburg's failed attempts to thwart Hitler's aim of being appointed Chancellor are investigated to provide an understanding of why eventually Hindenburg did appoint Hitler Chancellor. The final session of the course examines the steps Hitler, and the Nazis took to consolidate power and considers whether it was inevitable that Hitler would become Chancellor.
