Course overview
Course description
This course guest tutor Tony Tuckwell examines Chelmsford's contribution to war materiel by Marconi, Hoffman's and Crompton Parkinson and the Luftwaffe's counteractive bombing strategy. As well as analysing the impact on civilian life in Chelmsford, firstly from rationing, secondly from the treble evacuations and thirdly the civilian impact of Luftwaffe and V1/V2 bombing 3.
After this course will delve into the extraordinary contribution to the war of Chelmsford's two war-time MPs, both war heroes. John Macnamara MP 1935-44, was the last MP to be killed on active service, who, as a gay man, was subject to negative counter-briefing by Neville Chamberlain's allies and Ernest Millington, MP 1945-50, a man of communist sympathies who broke with the war-time coalition to stand for the new Commonwealth Party and his own radical agenda
