Course overview

This Intermediate course is a progression from the Beginners course of the autumn term. However, new learners are also warmly welcomed as we delve into this fascinating period of history. How did the Roman Empire survive the great challenge it faced during the late 7th and early 8th centuries and yet arise ultimately stronger? This course will examine how the Roman Empire survived the greatest onslaught of the Ulmayyad caliphate to capture Constantinople. We will then examine how the Roman state continued to adapt and evolve despite a series of internal crises within the state from the 690s.

Course description

This intermediate course will look at the enduring survival of the Roman Empire and how it withstood both external threats and internal crises.

On this course, we will identify at least two reasons for the survival of the Roman state in the 7th century. We will also investigate and individually summarise key features of the siege of Constantinople 674 - 678AD. Furthermore, we will investigate the main strategy of the Umayyad Caliphate against the Roman state and identify at least 2 key features of that strategy.

The learning, delivered by an experienced tutor, will be online in a friendly learning environment. There will be an opportunity to progress onto to the advanced course in the summer term.
