Entry Levels 1,2,3: If you have never studied this subject before and you’re not confident in your skills, Entry levels are a good starting point.
Level 1: Covers basic skills and knowledge needed for this subject
Level 2: Building on basic knowledge or experience. Similar to Grade 4/ C at GCSE or O level in England or Standards in Scotland.
Level 3: Learn about the topic in-depth and have a broad range of skills. Independent working Equivalent to an A level in England or Higher in Scotland.
Beginners: A perfect introduction if you have no experience and skills in this subject.
Improvers: The next step if you have basic skills or knowledge but want to progress them further.
Advanced: Build on the solid experience and skills you have in this subject, applying your skills and knowledge in a more complex way.

What we’ll cover
• Use numbers 1 to 20 in English.
• Match lower- and upper-case letters.
• Ask and answer questions in English.
• Spell out your name, saying the letters correctly.
• Match common everyday signs to their meanings in English
• Improve your confidence to learner.
This is a preparation course at pre-entry level. It is designed to lead on to study at Entry 1. It is not an accredited course.
The aim of this programme is to help you start your ESOL classes with the prior knowledge you’ll need.
First Steps in ESOL is an English course for adults. You will develop basic English language skills. It’s aimed at complete beginners so you don’t need any prior knowledge to sign up.
Before you can enrol on this course, you’ll do a skills check. Don’t worry, this isn’t an exam. It’s for us to make sure you get on the right course for your level. Our friendly team will contact you to start your skills check as part of your booking.
When you complete this introductory course, you will be ready to move on to learning at ESOL Entry 1.
What to expect
This introductory course takes around 45 hours to complete. It gives you more opportunities to learn the skills required to progress on your ESOL pathway.
Please note that you’ll need an internet connection to study this English course for beginners. This is so you can access our digital learning platform, Canvas.
