If you wish to develop your skills and confidence when dyeing fabric with natural dyes this course could be for you and you will learn the following: How to choose suitable fabrics for natural dyeing and how to tell whether a fabric is natural or synthetic. How to use some simple tie dye techniques as well as understanding what Shibori means. How to dye fabrics and wool with items in your kitchen cupboards and vegetable waste. What mordants are and when to use them. How to make marks on fabric , which could be stitched into later, with rusty items. How to use the sun as a heat source for dyeing fabrics. How to dye fabrics and wool with Indigo. This course is for beginners and those wishing to improve their knowledge of natural dyeing.

Course description

During this course you will have the opportunity to try different ways of dyeing fabric using natural dyes, including the following:

You will learn which fabrics are suitable for natural dyes and how to check whether a fabric is natural or synthetic. You will also learn how everyday items in your kitchen cupboards such as tea, coffee and turmeric can be used to dye fabrics. Also, how some vegetables such as onion skins, and red cabbage, as well as berries and flowers can be used to change the colour of fabric or wool. You will gain some knowledge about mordants, their uses and when you might need to use them. You will have an opportunity to see how rusty items can be used to make marks onto fabric which may have stitches added to them later. Some techniques for tying fabric prior to dyeing, including some simple Shibori techniques will also be covered. You will learn why Indigo is different to other fabric dyes and how to prepare an indigo vat ready to dye fabric and wool. Solar dyeing , an environmentally friendly and low cost method of dyeing fabric utilising the sun as a heat source, will also be covered.

This course is suitable for both beginners and those wishing to add to their knowledge of natural dyeing and the tutor will give help and guidance when needed.
