Course overview

This practical online workshop offers learners the opportunity to explore the textile art of Appliqué. This is a decorative textile process where small pieces of fabric are applied to another, larger piece. We will use the theme of flowers as a starting point and use hand stitch to hold the pieces together. You will begin to produce a painterly style image using fabrics as your palette of colours. You can produce a small sample piece during the session or the piece started may be finished in your own time after the session ends. It would be helpful if you have some experience of applique, but demonstrations and guidance will be provided by the tutor.

Course description

Appliqué is a textile art form where small pieces of fabric are attached to a base fabric. This online session will show you how to produce a floral image in a more painterly style using small fabric scraps and stitch. It is slow, therapeutic technique and you will start to build your own unique art work that can be completed in your own time if desired. Your flower image can be from any source - a photograph of flowers a magazine page, a painting, picture greetings card for example. You can also design your own image to work with, maybe translate a painting you have done. Fabrics can be recycled, bought, or old clothing and household textiles can be used. Use of stitch and colour will be discussed before you develop your own sample pieces or maybe start a finished piece. Even though this session is via Zoom, there will opportunities throughout the session to share your work and ideas with others, and receive support from the tutor.
