Course overview
Course description
This one-off session is a gentle introduction to a fascinating group of artists working in early twentieth-century New York. The Ashcan artists were so named because of their interest in ordinary life in the bustling streets of a New York that was developing fast whilst its polygot population lived much of life living in cramped tenements and busy market places. Artists who we will investigate include George Bellows, Robert Henri, John Sloan and Helen Farr Sloan- a younger artist but with the same interests in city life. John Sloan painted working class couples cunbathing on the top of rooftops of apartment blocks. George Bellows was taught by John Sloan and together they went on outings in search of everyday city subjects to paint. From 1907 New York City became Bellows' main subject. He later focussed on boxing rings, revelaing a violent atmosphere inspired by Goya's dramatic and grotesque characters. Our experienced tutor will enable you to discuss and debate these artists and their art within the group. No previous knowledge of art or 20th-Century American History is necessary. Join this online session to learn more about famous artists and discover brilliant works by lesser-known talents.
