Course overview

Mark making is fundamental to many art forms from painting, printing, design work and textile arts. Develop your knowledge of creating expressive marks using both wet and dry media to inform your art work. Just knowing how to hold a brush in different positions will create a broader range of marks. This session will build your skills in mark making using wet and dry media along with a variety of different tools - both commercially produced and your own home made tools! We will explore quality of line, produce texture and create pattern

Course description

This session will introduce you to a wide range of mark making using wet or dry media in a very experimental approach. This will help inform and develop your own art practice whatever medium you use whether it is watercolour painting, working with acrylics, stitch work or textile arts. You will use a range of wet and dry media and be guided through a series of activities during the morning to produce your own personalised “dictionary” of mark making. I will show examples of how to create a book or pamphlet of your outcomes from the session in which you can collate all your samples from the session and maybe add to it once the session is finished. We will work with many different types of media that you already have access to such as fine liners, markers, pencils, gel pens, etc. you will also need some wet media - ink or paint - and something to apply the wet colour with - brush, sponge, old credit card, and there will be ideas on making your own, natural brushes or applicators. A full list of media and equipment will be posted on Canvas.
