Course overview

Spend an enjoyable afternoon in these award winning formal and peaceful gardens and capture in your sketchbooks scenes of unusual plants and plenty of vibrant summery colour. Whether you’re drawn to the classic architecture of early Victorian terraced houses peeking through the foliage or want to focus on close-ups of flowering trees and vibrant flowerbeds, there's something to stimulate every budding artist and sketcher. Be inspired by gardens and the peaceful environment, birds in the trees, and away from the bustle of the city. No matter your experience level, come along for a joyful, relaxed afternoon of art in nature.

Course description

Join this sketching afternoon in one of Islington’s beautiful formal gardens, lovingly maintained by community volunteers. We will work from sketchbooks (small and large sizes) and recommend bringing Sharpie pens or black liner pen for capturing first impressions and textures. You can progress to colour using a medium of your choice, for example watercolour with watercolour pencils, or oil pastels on toned paper. Settle in your own spot on one of the many benches or your own folding stool to get closer to your chosen vista. Guidance will be offered by your tutor to help with composition and drawing/painting techniques in you chosen medium. Remember to dress warmly/layers in case of unpredictable weather. Consider a cap or sunglasses for sunny spells and bring suitable paper for wet or pastel work, water, brushes, containers, kitchen towel, bulldog clip (to stop papers from flying!), hot flask and drinking water, snacks. Meeting point is outside The Hanbury Arms Pub, corner of Arlington Square and Mary Street where there is also a toilet for convenience
