Course overview

The Animal World is our theme to explore a range of craft, drawing and painting techniques and materials. We will look at how different cultures through time and across the world portray animals and experiment with creating work in these different styles. We will create a small mosaic for an indoor setting, an animal themed monoprint or print with foamboard and use air dry materials such as Fimo modelling clay to create a small 3D artwork. We will also use a range of different mediums; such as pastels or acrylic paint to create a drawing or painting. This is a friendly and supportive group, offering a space for experimentation.

Course description

Let's explore the Animal World through painting and craft. We will look at the portrayal of animals through different cultures, exploring different textures of feathers, scales and animal fur, using a variety of different techniques and materials to create animal themed artwork. We will take inspiration from these different cultures to inspire us to create exciting artwork.

We will be printing with foam board and lino printing, drawing with pastels, creating card pillars or masks and decorating them with animal imagery, and making a small indoor mosaic on an animal theme. Each demo will provide materials for learners to experiment with and see what they would like to continue using, so that learners can try before purchasing their own. Topics and imagery will be provided by the tutor, but students are encouraged to explore and find imagery and other resources they are interested in. There will be sessions planned for students to finish work and for students to suggest topics and images, as well as materials they would like to experiment with.

This course is a fun and friendly environment with an experienced approachable tutor.

This activity includes materials that can stain and spoil clothing, students are encouraged to bring an apron or overshirt.
