Course overview

Gel printing is colourful, exciting and highly addictive! This session will introduce you to further techniques and the results can lead to some finished prints that could be suitable for framing, used in collage work or used to make greetings cards. Some resulting prints could be used as design ideas or starting points for a painting or textile design work. Colour and texture will be explored to produce a range of background ideas and these will be over printed using resist techniques or displacement of colour. We will be using simple materials that are easily accessible to create masks and stencils as well as being shown how to cut your own masks to produce layered, more complex prints.

Course description

A gel plate, roller, paper and some acrylic paint plus. A few basic, household items. These are used to create colourful, multi coloured and layered prints. On this course you will extend your knowledge of gel plate printing to produce more considered outcomes. Suitable paints will be discussed as well as papers to print on. We will produce some coloured backgrounds both flat and multi coloured grounds and experiment with texture and colour mixing. Colour can be displaced using items you have to hand such as cardboard tubes - toilet roll or kitchen roll inners - cotton buds, bubblewrap and more. You will use ready found items, both natural and man-made to use as masks and stencils to resist colour as well as being shown how to cut your own masks. We will experiment with combining techniques experienced ended during the session to produce multi layered prints. You will also learn how to register the papers for more accurate printing. During the session you will produce prints that can be framed, used in collage or why not use some to make some into hand-made greetings cards. Full instructions will be available on Canvas if you want to make your own gel plate.
