Course overview

In this course, you will develop a comprehensive understanding of abstract art. We'll start by enhancing your ability to recall various abstract art techniques and artists. Next, you'll gain insights into the distinctions between these techniques, enabling you to effectively compare them. Through practical exercises, you'll learn how to apply these techniques, and you'll evaluate their success. Finally, you'll have the opportunity to showcase your newfound skills by independently creating a unique piece using one of the abstract art techniques. By the end of this course, you'll be equipped with the knowledge and practical skills to confidently employ various abstract art techniques and produce your own abstract masterpiece.

Course description

This course focuses on abstract art, starting with an engaging induction into the world of abstract art. In week 1 you will explore the use of basic shapes and colours to create abstract outcomes. In week 2 you will discover abstract composition. You will use lines and marks inspired by Cy Twombly to create a series out outcomes in the style. In week 3 you delve further into the use of colour in abstract art and create colour outcomes inspired by Wassily Kandinsky and Josef Albers. You will explore the power of geometric and organic shapes. In week 4 landscape becomes the focus. You will create an abstract landscape inspired by Salvador Dalí, and everyday objects. In week 5 you will have an opportunity create an abstract portrait in the style of Picasso.

You will learn through practical tasks, peer learning, and quizzes. You will receive weekly feedback from your tutor.
