Course overview

In this introductory course, you will learn the skills needed to produce an aromatic candle and a lip balm, using correctly weighed and measured resources to produce handmade items, tailored to you personally. You will build on and expand existing maths skills to accurately combine ingredients, correctly balance the percentage of each element, working out how to increase or decrease the ingredients needed to do this and create safe products to take home. This course will demonstrate how maths is used in everything that we do, that we have the skills to achieve a goal and that maths can be fun!

Course description

Using a range of ingredients, you will precisely weigh and accurately measure these to produce a handmade aromatic candle and a soothing lip balm. Following guidance from the Tutor and using handouts to support the lesson, you will select suitable fragrances, waxes and essential oils, and use a variety of tools to make the items, taking into account health and safety at all times. You will use and expand on existing maths skills to correctly measure the candle wick and the outline of the candle and be able to calculate percentages to increase and decrease the size of the candle or the volume of the lip balm, which you will complete both items to take home. Maths is used in everyday life from shopping and paying bills to fun activities, such as this candle and beauty treatment course. By consolidating and improving your maths skills, you will discover that these skills can be taken into the workplace or used with children at home to great effect. There will be the opportunity to progress onto further learning with maths with the WEA or other providers, on completion of this course.
