Course overview

The theme for this course is "In The Style of.." which will give us a focus for exploring a range of art materials and techniques. It is a traditional method to examine and copy famous and excellent artists to learn their techniques. This term we will be looking at a selection of artists who work in different materials; pastels, watercolour, oils and acrylics - learning from their styles and recreating our own original works in that style. This is a friendly and supportive group, offering a space for experimentation. This activity includes materials that can stain and spoil clothing, learners are encouraged to bring an apron or oversized shirt.

Course description

The tutor will propose an artist for the beginning of the course and learners are invited to suggest artists they would like to study in later sessions. Learners are welcome to pursue their own projects and the tutor will be happy to advise on any work in class.

You will be applying drawing and painting techniques in the style of at least 2 artists, creating artwork using at least two different mediums. You will select two different papers, canvases or other surfaces for artwork and use the appropriate media, and apply simple rules of composition to create interest in a picture. You will complete at least one artwork in the style of an artist considered in the programme.

Visual references will be provided but please do bring any photos that you plan to use for your work. Learners are encouraged to explore and find imagery and other resources they are interested in. There will be planned sessions for suggesting topics and imagery.

There will be sessions on preparing paper and canvases, how to choose paints, brushes, palette knives and other tools. Each demo will provide materials for students to experiment with and see what they would like to continue using, so that learners can try before purchasing their own.
