Course overview

Painting Summer flowers from carefully observed drawings in watercolour. The abundance and choice of flowering plants at this time of year will allow us to explore the variety and intensity of shape, shine, depth of shade and colour as well as understanding the complexity of Nature at its blowsiest.. This is a course for those who want to fulfil their quest to learn about the Botanical world in all its riches. A course of meditative qualities with much observation and analysis of what we understand about plants and a great way to learn about the application of watercolour.

Course description

A very patient tutor will do plenty of demonstrations of how to achieve various aspects of Botanical illustration from the drawing of a flower, its composition on the page, the layering of complex colour combinations to reflect those of Nature and how to paint various tones of watercolour to replicate the flower in question.

Each subject will last two weeks, giving an opportunity to complete a beautiful and richly coloured painting of a plant specimen in all its Summer glory. There will be an ongoing theme of working through the spectrum of colours; exploring the range of watercolour paint from red through to violet and so familiarising oneself with the huge variety of colours: their names and their tonal qualities.

The course will also refer to Botanical painters, both working today and looking back at the rich and illustrious history of this branch of Art.

The group is very committed, knowledgeable and enthusiastic and there is much mutual encouragement and swapping of ideas. At the end of each session there is a group exhibition to encourage a critique of one’s own work and thoughts on the paintings of the rest of the group. We are also very welcoming to new members as we all support and learn from each other.
