Course overview

If you would like to learn a new sewing skill that combines Hand Embroidery and small patchwork fabric placement, then this the course is for you. The course is aimed at improvers that already have a basic knowledge of hand embroidery and would like to combine basic and intermediate stitch techniques. The techniques you will learn are based on the beautiful historical decorative embroidered quilts from the 1800’s where the style started. You will have the opportunity to hand piece together a colourful fabric background square and let loose your creativity to embellish the seams with freestyle hand embroidery stitches.

Course description

This course has been designed to introduce the historical technique of Victorian Style Embroidered Patchwork, also known as ‘Crazy Quilts’ and ‘Fancy Work’. The course is suitable for improvers who have a basic knowledge of Hand Embroidery and would like to add to their practise and apply stitch techniques in a new and creative way. The sessions will begin with the introduction of ‘Crazy Quilting’ and how the fashion for the style originated before moving onto starting the project creation. The practical part of the course will be in two parts, beginning with piecing together small and medium scrap sized pieces of fabric on a base background. The second part of the course will concentrate on learning to combine stitches and apply them to the fabric background that was put together in the first part of the course. The aim of the course is to create a small example of Victorian Style Embroidered Patchwork and embellish it with a combination of simple and composite hand embroidery techniques, learned during the sessions. Materials required for the course are a base fabric such as felt or batting, fabric scraps, sewing thread, embroidery thread in various colours, needles, fabric scissors, thread cutting scissors. More details will be given on Canvas.
