Course overview

Explore the world of calligraphy in this very practical course. If you have a little more experience or are a rusty returner, this class will help you improve your techniques and challenge you in this beautiful craft. Ideal for right and left handers alike. You do not need to be artistic to enjoy calligraphy. Studying the historic styles is essential for your understanding of calligraphy. The course will include: -advanced calligraphy techniques -short projects -plenty of guidelines and worksheets to help you -historic texts and manuscripts and their context as the Book of Kells and the Lindisfarne Gospels -decorative elements, their use and how to create them -tools and equipment used in manuscripts, their use and maintenance.

Course description

Using a wide variety of tools that are readily available you will be able to explore some of the beautiful styles of lettering from previous centuries in Northern Europe.

Prior knowledge of calligraphy is advised for this course, which runs for 12 weeks. Each lessons last 90 minutes, plenty of time to master the techniques, ask questions and receive feedback from your teacher who is a professional calligrapher. There will the opportunity to do homework and group projects to ensure that you continue to progress.

By the end of the course you will be creating lettering that is both useful and elegant. Beautiful writing never goes out of style. Further study options are available through the WEA after this course.
