Information on our Courses

The types of courses we run are very varied. Some courses are targeted at particular groups (for example, parents with young children), whereas others are open to the public at large.

We do our best to take education out to where it is most needed, in amongst the local community, rather than expecting people to come to us. Consequently, a WEA course can be set up almost anywhere - in clubs, community centres, village halls, schools, pubs, or where people work.

Our educational activity can be divided into three main areas, depending on the learners and students they are intended for:

Courses intended for anyone. Subjects can vary greatly, ranging from Creative Writing, say, to Using the internet, taking in anything in between, from the Brontes to Local History

Courses aimed at particular groups, Subjects include: 'Helping in Schools' (for volunteer classroom helpers), 'Stepping Out' (for those wishing to improve their mental health), 'Training on Wheels' (computer training and personal development where it is difficult to access courses otherwise), and many more.

Courses offering people a chance to learn at, or through, work. Subjects include: 'Learning at Work' (in conjunction with UNISON), 'Essential Skills in Health and Care' (for those working in the Health & Care sector), and a range of courses in partnership with the TUC.

You can find out more on our courses from our online course search. We’re currently developing a new course search for the Region so if you can’t find what you are looking for, please let us know. You can e-mail yorkshumber@wea.org.uk us or call on: 0113 245 3304

If you cannot find the course you are looking for with the WEA, please click here to access current information provided by other local colleges, universities and information providers.
