The WEA's work in the Yorkshire & Humber Region is based on a partnership between:
learners
voluntary members and workers
potential learners and their communities
partner organisations, including funders
tutors
other paid, professional staff
Volunteers work hard to organise WEA Branches running part-time courses and educational activities across the region. Each branch is different. We have some large city branches, including those in Sheffield, Leeds and York, who offer lots of courses and some small, rural branches that offer one or two courses per term. All are important to their local communities.
More than 30,000 learners enrol on WEA courses across the region every year through our branches and through other courses and activities organised by staff who work closely with partner organisations and local communities.
As well as running 'traditional adult education' courses, we have a strong emphasis on community development through education.
We have a long history of working with people so that they can learn in ways that benefit their families and communities as well as themselves. We also work with trade unions and employers to develop and deliver courses in workplaces, including settings as varied as schools, factories and farms.
