Everyday Economics
Rose Ardron
The air is full of talk about economic crisis and the markets. Do we really know what they’re talking about?
‘We’re all in this together’, but how can we make sense of it if we don’t understand the language?
This session will offer a common sense approach to understanding economics. We will start from the
grassroots – what we already know about economics from our everyday lives.
We will use this knowledge to build a tool kit so we can start to ask questions
about the global economic system.
“The purpose of studying economics is not to acquire a set of ready-made answers to economic questions,
but to learn how to avoid being deceived by economists.” Joan Robinson, British economist, 1960.

Work - For Love or Money
Helen Jackson
Said a woman to her friend on the tram the other day about her son: “He can’t find work for love or money – none of them can!”
This session will focus on and find out what we mean by ‘work’. We hear from politicians of all persuasions about their commitment to
‘hard working families’; tackling the ‘work shy’ benefits claimants; the ‘evils’ of unemployment. But how can the state properly value ‘work’ whilst bankers get their bonuses and carers get the
minimum wage - or less – or, more frequently, nothing at all in payment? Doesn’t the whole fabric of life appear unfair ?
“It’s the rich what gets the pleasure,
It’s the poor what gets the blame,
It’s the same the whole world over,
Ain’t it a bleeding shame !”
Our aim will be not simply to deplore unfairness, but to understand why our society is run this way and why we look for
the meaning of achievement and productivity only through measurements such as the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) which
considers output in terms of product per Full Time Equivalent paid worker rather than the hidden contribution made by the majority of our citizens.
If you are old or young, in work or seeking work, paid or unpaid then do please join us.

Home Sweet Home
Graham Birkin
What makes a good home?
Why do we often long for return when we were forced to leave?
Based on the experience of participants, the session will discuss the pull of the past and the need to move on in the present.
There will be a sharing of stories from Sheffield’s recent arrivals, with maps, photographs and newspaper articles,
giving us all an understanding of where we have come from and our enduring attachment to past and place.
At the end we will know a little more about ourselves and our neighbours.
