Volunteers are vital to our work, and are involved in a variety of roles. From arranging and promoting local courses, and running events to sitting on branch, regional and national committees, up to trustee level. We have over one thousand volunteers involved in activities at all levels of the WEA, below four volunteers explain what they do at the WEA.

Ian: from banking to volunteering, to teaching
Ian’s previous jobs gave him no satisfaction, and he felt frustrated at not being able to use his language degree. He joined the Omega Centre and began working as a volunteer assistant in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes.. Read more about Ian.

Liz: growing adult education in Maidenhead
Liz has seen the Maidenhead branch programme blossom since taking up the role of Branch Secretary in 1995, when only 11 courses were offered. The size of the branch means that Liz is involved in a variety of activities from arranging meetings, putting together course brochures and encouraging more people learning. Read more about Liz.

Ron: supporting lifelong learning across Essex
After retiring as a secondary school teacher, Ron has dedicated some of his spare time volunteering as the Chairman of the WEA Essex Federation. He helps to support all WEA Essex branches and helps to promote branches by organising local events. Read more about Ron.
