Who we are

The WEA is different from many adult education providers.

We are a charity, with a particular mission to ensure that all adults have access to the kind of adult education that they need to flourish, as an individual, and in society.

We were founded in 1903.  Since that time, we have existed as a network of people with shared interests and beliefs, and not only as an educational institution.

We have over 80,000 students and learners each year, coming on part-time courses of all kinds. We have over 40,000 members, who have signed up to express their support for the value of adult education and lifelong learning. We have over 2,000 tutors, 300 staff, and more than 1,000 volunteers helping WEA courses to run in towns and villages across the country. We also work with hundreds of partner organisations, including community organisations, other charties, and local and national government.

The WEA's model of adult education is one that hopes to improve peoples' lives and the society we live in. We are a friendly organisation!  You can read more about 'who we are' by following the links to the left.
