'Peaceful campaigner' Christine takes adult learning to the top in Trafalgar Square

WEA Wakefield tutor-organiser Christine Sharman has called her one-hour stint on Trafalgar Square's empty plinth "a fabulous experience". Christine was the fourth of 2,400 lucky participants to spend one hour on the eight metre high platform and spent her time sketching, taking photos and promoting adult learning.

Christine brought up with her an A4 flick book which animated the story of the eagle and the hen and its relation to the joy of learning and everyone's right to accessible education. Christine also had a board and a placard with the drawings on it to enhance her message of lifelong learning. Christine says: "I wanted to tell everybody not to be scared of learning, especially in West Yorkshire where the statistics are terrible for people leaving school and coming away feeling that they are not bright."

Chritine was excited to meet the other participants as well as artist and sculptor Antony Gormley, who founded the project. Talking on Steve Bailey's Drivetime show on BBC Radio Leeds, Christine said: "I was privileged to meet him in the morning photoshoot and thanked him for this great experience."

Even though Christine has a fear of heights, she used her artistic and meditation skills to get through the whole hour and even braved the British weather when it started to rain. "It was a fabulous experience the views were amazing over London with the birds flying and the crowds were streaming across. There was some rain as well, I had my artist easel but it all collapsed because of the weather but I still carried on sketching a little bit" added Christine.

The plinth will be occupied for 100 days in total and Christine believes that: "At the end we will get a huge snapshot of Britain." However, you could still be in with a chance to express your own artistic side: "I had such a fun day I can't tell you, and I would urge everyone if there are places to apply. My tip is don't look down!" says Christine.
