Celebrating Success at 101 Hinckley Road

During the course, with tutor WEA Hilary Broadbent, the group progressed from basic IT to more sophisticated knowledge about the use of digital cameras, and the way in which images can be used creatively with a computer. A certificate and cheque for £50 were presented at the Region’s Annual Conference on 13th November.

In a similar story of success, a local Leicester Library was recently the host of an exhibition of paintings created by learners from a 101 Hinckley Road watercolour course. The artwork had a botanical theme, revealing the beauty and intricacies of plants, vegetables and flowers.

Annabel Barrett, the course tutor who organised the exhibition remarked, “This is the result of a group of people, some of whom were complete beginners, who must be congratulated on achieving such a high standard.”

The group also Some of the members of the award winning ITforMe class, pictured with General Secretary Richard Bolsin and Mike Attwell, East Midlands Region Secretary, on a recent visit to the centre. used ICT to add a new dimension to their work. As well as learning various watercolour painting techniques, and experimenting in drawing in pencil and charcoal, they learnt how to scan their finished paintings to produce a digital image, which could then be used to create all sorts of things – from personally designed greetings cards, to attachments for emails.

On a recent visit to the branch, General Secretary, Richard Bolsin was so impressed with the work of the group, that he has asked them to come up with a design for next year’s Christmas card. He commented,: Artwork by 101 Hinckley Road watercolour students, on display in Leicester Library “I really enjoyed seeing what you’re doing at Hinckley Road, and I was very pleased to have the chance to meet and talk to so many and such diverse groups of learners.”

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the learners at 101 Hinckley Road for their successes, and look forward to seeing their design for the WEA Christmas card this time next year!
