One hundred year mark for Leicester WEA

The Leicester Branch of the WEA was started one hundred years ago, on Friday 4 September 1908. To mark the centenary year, a book has been produced which commemorates the work of the WEA in Leicester over the years.

During the branch's centenary academic year, a group of learners from the Hands on History class, led by WEA tutor, Cynthia Brown, conducted research into the Leicester Branch archives to trace the growth of the WEA in the City. In addition to the branch archives, group members also conducted interviews and surveys, undertook web-based research and visited local and national archives.

The result of this year's work has been the publication of Still Learning: 100 Years of the Workers' Educational Association in Leicester. Copies are available to buy for £3.00 from the address below, and an extract from the book can be read here: Still Learning: Ramblers, Players and Dancers

The book launch is on Friday, 14 November 2008 at Vaughan College, Leicester, by invitation only. The evening will include a short talk by Professor Robert Colls, School of Historical Studies, University of Leicester
