"The WEA stands for the many values I hold too -and it has enabled me to learn how to teach that generates equality and social justice through exploring all the issues as well as the knowledge of my subject topics. It's a way of teaching that is the best and still gives me enjoyment and for my own learning too.” WEA Tutor East Midlands, Psychology and Health and Well-being. Read more

Qualifications and experience

We expect our tutors to be suitably qualified and experienced in community learning. In general, there is an expectation of both a teaching qualification and subject qualifications at degree level.

Tutors teaching accredited courses and English, Maths or ESOL are required to have both appropriate teaching and relevant subject qualifications.

However, we recognise that individuals acquire suitable experience through a variety of routes:

  • Being involved in adult learning through becoming involved in training for their company, community group or trade union for example.
  • Developing detailed subject knowledge and have a passion for their subject(s) that may make them ideal candidates for teaching with the WEA.
  • Developing excellent support or facilitation skills through youth or community work.

So it’s worth contacting us, even if you don’t have all the relevant qualifications and experience right now. If you have the qualities and experience we are looking for, we will support you to develop appropriate qualifications.

Our offer

Following success at interview, we will offer an induction and a supported probation period. Induction is normally delivered face to face, in person or by video meetings and we require you to complete online learning modules in Safeguarding and Prevent duties before you can start teaching.

The probation period will begin when you start teaching with us and will require you to complete some mandatory training, which may be delivered face to face, by video conference or online. As a teacher your classroom practice will be regularly observed by professional staff and other stakeholder.

You will normally receive a classroom observation of your teaching and learning during your probation period. All tutors have line managers who will work closely with you, carrying out annual appraisals, monitoring of courses and supporting you in ongoing development.
