Tutors

Our tutors are the 'face' of the WEA - and we have over two thousand working with us every year. You can read more about tutoring for the WEA here.

Some of our tutors have been at the WEA for many years, teaching popular courses to loyal students and branches, and some are newer to the organisation, working on our community and targeted programmes.  Many of our tutors are also members of the WEA, sharing a belief in the value of adult education and 'learning for all'.  Four tutors, below, provide a sense of what they do and what it's like to be a WEA tutor.

Guy

Guy Arnold, WEA Southern region

Guy is WEA tutor in International Affairs and a freelance writer and lecturer. He has written around 50 books, mainly concerned with Africa and the relations between North and South, or the developed and the developing worlds but also about Britain. Guy runs courses for the WEA in current and international affairs, and history. "Some people keep their expertise to themselves and it is a pleasure to draw it out,” he says of his class discussions. Matthew

Matthew Beresford, WEA East Midlands region.

Matthew goes out to local communities in the West Midlands to encourage involvement in archaeology and local history. He has been running a community archaeology project for the past year, after running the course for six months initially. Matthew also tutors for other WEA courses. Matthew says he feels like he is really making a positive difference for his student groups, some of whom are living with disability and others with mental health issues. Read more.

Maggi

Maggi Gibson, WEA Scotland

Maggi is a successful author, who revealed her creative writing skills after taking classes with the WEA in Scotland. She says the classes changed the course of her life as they helped kick start her confidence and unvcover a hidden talent. She is now a full time professional writer. Now the tables are turned, Maggi says she finds her job as tutor really rewarding, as now she can help her students to bring out their skills in writing. Read more.

Julie's student's winning work

Julie Hand, WEA Yorkshire and Humber region

Julie, (not pictured!), is a self-taught artist and a WEA tutor, helping her students to create mosaic pieces and encouraging them to discover and express their personal creativity. This year, a student of Julie's won the Regional 2011 Topps Tiles award for her exceptional tiger mosaic on the left. Read more.
