The Herne Bay Branch has been around for more than 30 years and over that time run a wide range of courses in a variety of subjects, including music appreciation, literature and local history.
Sam Butterworth was Herne Bay Branch's Chairman for 17 years, resigning after he was 90 years old, and was an enthusiastic student, attending courses in a number of subjects. He was always keen to extend his already considerable knowledge in many spheres of learning, especially literature, music and art. He was also very interested in history and philosophy.
In old age he was frustrated by hearing loss but until he because too infirm physically he never missed our Day Schools which he used to "host" with charm and humour. He was a stalwart support to Betty Collins, founding Branch Secretary in 1983, and to Jenny Bennett when she succeeded her. His encouragement and wise advice was invaluable and members of the current branch committee miss him dearly.
When Sam died he generously left £120,000 to the WEA and some of this money was set aside especially for Herne Bay Branch to support our programme of day schools, visits, guest speakers etc. Sam's support for the WEA continues through his generous bequest.
