Ron: supporting lifelong learning across Essex

Ron at a favourite pastimeRon is Chair of WEA Essex Federation and says he spends an average of one day a week volunteering in his role - although this increases around Autumn, with the start of the new academic year. Ron describes what's involved in his volunteer role:

I was first introduced to the WEA six years ago when a friend asked if I was interested in taking over in the running of all the WEA day schools in Essex.

I had recently retired as a secondary school teacher so had a bit of spare time on my hands. I then got involved in the WEA Essex Federation and latterly became Chairman.

As Chairman I run and chair meetings; I write for the Essex Federation newsletter; help ensure branches are set up properly, and take part in organising local events. I work closely with a number of colleagues and we all do our best to make sure everything is run efficiently. However, it can be difficult to get new volunteers and people to come on board!

What I enjoy most about my role with the WEA is seeing new branches become successful, running good courses with lots of students.

We have started a new initiative in Eastern Region, where we ask people to nominate any long-standing branch members and we choose one person to receive a certificate. I work to support the activities of all the Branches across Essex and try to get everyone involved.”

Ron's role, and others like his, support the provision of WEA branch courses meaning that many towns and villages have a range of local adult education courses on offer. Without the support of people like Ron, we would be running less courses in certain areas. If you are interested in setting up a local branch or becoming a volunteer you can contact your local WEA regional office.
