North West Award Winners

The WEA has been in the grip of its annual awards season, both in region and nationally!

Held as part of our AGM, the North West dedicated an afternoon to celebrating the incredible achievements of those staff, volunteers, tutors, students and partners throughout the region. Award winners such as: Staff member Joan Isaacs, who helped to resuscitate a stranger by performing lifesaving CPR. The students on the New Leaf project who overcame incredible personal and physical barriers to complete an NCFE Level 3 Award in Education & Training. And the courageous women from the SWAN Women’s Centre, who collectively published a moving and poetic book of their creative writing.

All of these winners and many more help to showcase the inspirational work accomplished throughout the region, with Area Education Manager Rehana Mohammed & the New Leaf project winners going one step further, scooping national awards on Thursday evening!

Rehana won the WEA Staff Member of the Year Award, and the New Leaf Project won the WEA Student Group of the Year Award and the WEA North West regional Award. The New Leaf project, funded by the BBO/Big Lottery Fund, impressed the judges with the students overcoming a range of personal barriers, as well as supporting each to successfully complete their 10-week level three NCFE in education and training qualification. Receiving their award at the National Awards ceremony in London, Ruth Spellman, WEA’s chief executive, said she that the group represented “the breadth and depth of the WEA and our enduring capacity to engage hearts and minds in the serious business of learning. The outcomes and impacts on individuals and communities are truly inspiring.”

Well done to all our winners!
