Liz: growing adult education in Maidenhead

Liz of WEA Maidenhead branchLiz volunteers for about ten hours a week for WEA Maidenhead Branch. She helps to make sure that there is a wide range of courses for Maidenhead locals, and that the courses run efficiently throughout the term. She has been the Branch Secretary since 1995, and explains what her role is about:

“What I enjoy most about my role is meeting so many new people in Maidenhead and getting involved in the local community. I work very closely with my colleagues especially the Treasurer and members of the branch committee and also staff from the WEA Southern Region.

We’re a big branch with lots of students, and as a result I’m involved in a variety of activities.  I arrange meetings and liaise with tutors and colleagues from the branch to finalise what courses we’re going to offer. I also put the branch brochure together and publicise our courses in the local area and assist our Treasurer with student enrolment and fee information.

Our branch has changed considerably in the last ten years, when we ran just eleven courses - last year we ran nearly sixty!

We work hard in the branch to try and get people involved in volunteering for the WEA for their local community. I think that everyone here recognises and supports the work that our volunteers do in making sure that local people have access to a good range of part-time courses.”
