Jeffrey Machin Foundation

The WEA has teamed up with Hampshire Fare to offer a range of one-day courses about food and drink at their annual Food Festival in July. Hampshire has a rich food heritage and Hampshire Fare represents and promotes local producers of food, drink and craft. Our courses will complement the Festival’s local focus by looking at food in a wider context:

Feasting & Fasting in Dickens Novels

Saturday 5 July 2008
WEA Branch Venue: Havant

In the richness and variety of his treatment of food and drink, Dickens is the indisputable master among Victorian novelists. We’ll examine our own childhood food memories, linking these to Dickens' use of food and drink in the major novels. Note: people should bring any copy of Dickens; old family photos; and any small food-related artifacts (such as cookbooks, recipes, cutlery etc.) The reduced fee is available to members of the Hampshire Fare.

For further information and to book contact Jean Mackenzie on 02392 262477.

Darkly Divine: the Delicious Story of Chocolate

Saturday 19 July 2008
WEA Branch Venue: Petersfield

Ever since Europeans ‘borrowed’ it from the Aztecs, chocolate has become a universal favourite, inspiring the passions as well as the taste buds. In this friendly and informal day school, we’ll chronicle chocolate’s exotic history through literature, art and films, learn some classic recipes, and (of course) taste some of the best. Includes a chocolate-making demonstration and tasting by the Alresford Chocolate Company - www.chocolatecraft.co.uk The reduced fee is available to members of the Hampshire Fare.

Food in Film: Eating Beyond the Narrative

Thursday 24 July 2008
WEA Branch Venue: Winchester

In films, food is often more than mere sustenance. We’ll look at films from all over the world and the significance of food in different contexts. John Riley is a tutor at the British Film Institute. The reduced fee is available to members of the Hampshire Fare.

For further information and to book contact Felicity Wethered on 01962 852 962 or 01962 848 038.
