We’re delighted that the new Ofsted inspection report on the WEA confirms a return to strength for the organisation. The report describes the overall effectiveness of WEA provision as good and identifies provision in the subject area of health, public services and care as outstanding.

In 1975, members of the WEA Oxford Industrial Branch reclaimed a piece of history that seemed to be missing from the school books. In Burford, they held a meeting in remembrance of the Leveller soldiers. The following year, Tony Benn read in Burford church. Now, every year people come to Burford on the Saturday nearest to 17 May, to debate, hold a procession, listen to music to remember the Levellers and the importance of justice and democracy.

‘All forms of good adult learning are valuable’, says John Denham, Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills in his introduction to the government consultation on the future of ‘informal’ adult learning.
