WEA East Midlands Region

The WEA delivers learning opportunities in all five counties of the East Midlands. Courses are delivered across the whole region, with concentrations in the major urban areas.

We are committed to enabling people to realise their full potential through learning. We believe that learning has the potential to change and enrich lives and communities. Half of the courses we offer enable adults with few or no qualifications to re-engage with and take their first steps back into learning. Some of these courses enable learners to gain recognised qualifications; others aim to help learners with low confidence to start a lifelong learning journey.

We also offer a large programme of courses for adults with a passionate commitment to learning for its own sake. Learners can become involved in the planning and delivery of these courses, through our network of over sixty WEA volunteer-run branches covering all the major cities, the majority of market towns and a considerable number of villages. Our current priorities in the region include: digital inclusion; active citizenship learning; equality and diversity, and innovation in volunteering within adult and lifelong learning.

How we work

Our success both currently and historically is based on our belief in working with learners and partners to deliver what is wanted and needed at an individual learner and community level. We own very few of our own venues, so we can respond flexibly to local need and deliver learning at the heart of communities. Our voluntary branch structure ensures learners can be involved in the courses they attend.

An important part of our work in the East Midlands is the innovative education projects we run, funded externally through local and national government departments and other funders including the Big Lottery Fund and the European Social Fund.

In partnership

Our partnership work within the region enables us to respond to both local need and government priorities. In the East Midlands we currently deliver community based courses with over forty partners. These range from very small community groups to regional infrastructure consortiums. Our excellent reputation is based on our responsiveness and ability to deliver high quality learning programmes at a local level.

Who learns?

With over 6,800 members and 200 active volunteers recruited from our learners in the East Midlands, the learner voice is listened to at a very local level. We cater our provision to students from all abilities and backgrounds, as the statistics for 2010/11 show:

• 25% live in postcodes which indicate deprivation (as defined by the government)

• 32% did not have to pay fees for economic reasons (as defined by funders)

• 29% had qualifications below Level 2 when they joined their courses

• 24% had a declared physical disability

• 10% had a declared learning disability

• 11% were from a declared ethnic minority
