Digital Nations in the Making
How can participation in adult learning be widened effectively? How, in dispersed and multi-centre teaching environments, can support and resources for learning be provided so learners can progress through learning programmes which build confidence and are responsive to their needs?
A new book published by NIACE and the WEA considers these questions in relation to new technologies and adult learning – and the exciting opportunities available to both learners and adult education providers.
Digital Nations in the Making, written by Ian Harford, considers the issues through a comparative study on the use of digital and web-based technologies in post-school education and community development in Canada, the USA and the UK.
The book explores how new technologies are being deployed to promote adult learning and skills and to develop capacity in local communities. It reflects the experiences and actions of governments, educational institutions and voluntary organisations trying to tackle issues of the ‘digital divide’, offering an insightful analysis of the current situation as well as recommendations for ways forward.
A range of support material published as a ‘virtual annexe’ to the book is available from the author’s companion website to Digital Nations and includes reference materials cited in the book and even a photo gallery of the author’s images, collected from travels across the UK, Canada and the US. The site also has links to an author’s blog featuring personal reflections on innovation and information technology in community learning.
Digital Nations in the Making is available for £16.95 plus p&p direct from NIACE with 20% discount for NIACE members.
