Thank you to the thousands of friends, members and supports of the WEA who participated in the #SaveAdultEducation campaign.
You may have heard that there was a 17% cut in the budgets to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills which funds adult education by 2020.
As part of that settlement, the government has announced that it is protecting funding for the core adult skills participation budget in cash terms, but that it is seeking £360m of efficiencies and savings from the adult skills budget by 2019-20, with a focus on savings from the supporting budgets, such as the UKCES budget and through FE restructuring in the area reviews.
Although it is too soon to say how these budget changes will affect the WEA, we are delighted that the government has continued to recognise the importance of adult education funding. We have no doubt that this is partly due to the number of people who supported our campaign, wrote to their MPs and signed our petition.
We will continue to make the case for the value of adult education and the WEA Chief Executive, Ruth Spellman, has made a comment on the Spending Review here.
Thank you again for your support and we will keep you informed over the coming months about the next stage in our campaign.
