If an event is listed here, it's open to members of the general public. This page lists WEA events but not WEA courses, which are listed on our online course search. Here you may also find fun learning-related events, which are hosted by other education organisations and individuals.

Learning at Work Day

Event times: 9am to 6pm
Learning at Work (LAW) Day is an annual awareness campaign organised by the Campaign for Learning (CfL) promoting and supporting workplace learning events across the country. It encourages people in public, private and voluntary organisations to offer learning to all employees.
LAW Day is the perfect platform for stimulating workplace learning and skills. LAW Day events are a non-threatening way of encouraging individuals reluctant or resistant to learning into exploring 'what's on offer'.

Adult Learners' Week 2012

Adult Learners’ Week is the UK’s largest annual festival of learning. It inspires thousands of people each year to discover how learning can change their lives.
Through out the UK thousands of events and award ceremonies mark Adult Learners’ Week, celebrating all kinds of learners and promotes the benefits of every type of learning.
As part of Adult Learners' Week, awards are given to recognise the achievements of outstanding individuals and inspiring learning projects through national and regional awards.

Legacy Launch
Location: Town Hall, Oxford
Event times: 10.30am to 3.00pm
An event to showcase the work of the WEA in Oxfordshire will take place on Friday May 18 at the Town Hall, Oxford.
A few free places are still available at the event which will launch the WEA Adler Legacy. One of the central pieces is an outstanding community mosaic created by Headington and Barton residents.

Essex Federation WEA 'Cultural Olympiad' 2012

The Essex Federation of the Workers’ Educational Association* is organising a series of events as part of the Cultural Olympiad and to mark the progress of the Olympic Torch through the County.

38th Annual Levellers Day
Location: Burford, Oxfordshire, Warwick Hall, Church Green, Burford OX18 4RY
Event times: 10.30 to 17.30
Levellers Day is an imaginative reconstruction based on experiences of the Burford Leveller martyrs as it might have been written by a witness to their deaths. The Levellers were a political movement during the English Civil War. They were ahead of their time, with beliefs in democracy, religious tolerance, and social justice.
Levellers Day commemorates a stand against dictatorship by Leveller soldiers in 1649 and its suppression by Cromwell.
This year will see a host of activities including speeches, debates, a procession, ceremony and music. This years theme is: 'Protesting and Surviving'.

Celebrate the Olympics with the WEA
Location: Eton College Rowing Centre, Dorney Lake
Event times: 6.30pm to 9.30pm
The WEA Slough branch has organised an evening at one of the new sites built for the Olympics 2012. 'From flat fields to olympic heights - the story of Dorney Lake' will be led by Speaker Roderick Watson, DL, who oversaw the 10-year construction of the spectacular, world-class rowing lake, parkland and arboretum that is Dorney Lake (near Windsor), where the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic rowing and kayaking competitions will be held.
Head Coach Terry Hunter, whose son Mark won a Rowing Gold Medal at Beijing, will also be present.
The WEA Slough Chairman Alan Madge and branch members look forward to welcoming you and your friends to a fascinating and topical evening.

The Great White Silence
Location: Ritz Cinema Belper, 76b King Street, Belper, DE56 1QA
Event times: 6.00pm to 10.00pm
In order to mark the centenary of Captain Scott's expedition to the South Pole the EM Region is organising a 'tour' around the region's branches, local village halls and independent cinemas of Herbert Ponting's film 'The Great White Silence' . The film will be introduced by a WEA tutor at all 21 showings which will be at venues including the Wirksworth Festival, Arnold Bonington Theatre, Derby Quad, Nottingham Broadway, and Leicester Phoenix. Local branch members will support each event and will be available talk to people about the work of the WEA and distribute course brochures and information. This will be a fantastic opportunity to raise the profile of the WEA both locally and nationally. There will be 2 showings before the summer break, but the majority will be in the autumn of 2012.
