Women and Health
Who is it for?
The courses on offer are open to women who are interested in understanding
more about health issues affecting women, and who wish to gain greater
control over their own health and well being.
It is particularly designed for those with few or no formal qualifications.
It aims to build women’s confidence in both their ability
to learn generally and in taking control of their own health. It
provides a stepping stone to further educational opportunities and
improved health and well being.
What does it cover?
This portfolio of courses offers a range of learning materials in
a variety of formats, some offering accreditation with others providing
a 'first step' into adult learning through a non-acredited route.
All the courses cover a wide range of health issues relating to
women, with the opportunity to acquire the skills and know how to
become local community health activists.
How is it organised?
All the courses in the portfolio are flexibly structured to meet
local needs, but typically a course will run with two hours sessions
over ten or twenty four weeks. Courses are offered in the local
community, in a safe, accessible venue, with child care support,
and at times of the day which will suit women with dependent care
responsibilities. Some courses are offered in partnership with Primary
Care Trusts and are supported by local General Practitioners.
On completion of the course students wishing to taking their interest
further can take the Women’s Learning Programme: Women and
Health course. This gives an opportunity to gain accreditation through
the Open College Network if desired.
