Good Practice
The Women’s Education Committee (WEC) offers an award for
good practice in Women’s Education at the Biennial Conference.
The Margaret James Award for Best Practice in Women’s
Education is offered to District groups or projects which
can demonstrate that they have been innovative, widened participation
by reaching out to marginalised groups, and promoted women’s
learning opportunities as a positive measure.
The award, which gives a cash prize to the winning group, is named
in memory of Margaret James, a tutor and voluntary member in the
1930s and 40s, who made a generous bequest to the WEA on her death
to be used for the purposes of promoting women’s education.
The Women’s Education Committee also offers financial support
to Districts each year through the WEC Development Fund.
This provides support to informal outreach and development work
undertaken with women by Districts as a first step towards developing
educational opportunities.
The projects and groups involved in the Margaret James Award and
the WEC development funded work, form the basis of occasional publications
which seek to share good practice and record the best of the work
achieved in women’s education by the WEA.
