About the Region
The Region was formed in August 2004 after a merger between the
long- standing WEA Districts of Yorkshire North and Yorkshire South.
The largest of the WEA’s nine English Regions, Yorkshire
and Humber’s educational provision makes up 25% of the WEA’s
total provision in England.
This year, our new region, which covers an area that takes in
everything from the Dales to inner cities, will be running over
3,000 courses through over 50 volunteer-led local branches.
We offer courses throughout all parts of Yorkshire, as well as
in North and North East Lincolnshire and Kingston Upon Hull and
York Unitary Authorities – and in 2004/5 we hope to provide
courses and classes for more than 35,000 learner enrolments across
the Region.
We are committed to widening participation through learning and
are supported by a strong and committed voluntary membership.

Information
on our Courses
The types of courses we run are very varied. Some courses are targeted
at particular groups (for example, parents with young children),
whereas others are open to the public at large.
We
do our best to take education out to where it is most needed,
in amongst the local community, rather than expecting people
to come to us. Consequently, a WEA course can be set up almost
anywhere - in clubs, community centres, village halls, schools,
pubs, or where people work.
Our educational activity
can be divided into three main areas, depending on the learners
and students they are intended for:
- Courses intended for anyone. Subjects can vary greatly,
ranging from Creative Writing, say, to Using the internet, taking
in anything in between, from the Brontes to Local History
- Courses aimed at particular groups,. Subjects include:
'Helping in Schools' (for volunteer classroom helpers), 'Stepping
Out' (for those wishing to improve their mental health), 'Training
on Wheels' (computer training and personal development where
it is difficult to access courses otherwise), and many more.
- Courses offering people a chance to learn at, or through,
work. Subjects include: 'Learning at Work' (in conjunction with
UNISON), 'Essential Skills in Health and Care' (for those working
in the Health & Care sector), and a range of courses in partnership
with the TUC.
You can find out more on our courses from our online
Course Search. We’re currently
developing a new course search for the Region so if you can’t
find what you are looking for, please let us know. You can e-mail

Milestone for ‘Helping
in Schools’
The WEA’s national ‘Helping in Schools’ Programme
(which originated in the Yorkshire and Humber Region) has
reached its tenth year, and to celebrate the fact a tenth
anniversary event was recently held in Halifax. Students,
past and present, joined WEA staff and colleagues from
Local Authorities to celebrate their achievements.

Support for Learners
We’re developing and improving our support for
learners. Over the next few months we will be improving
our induction for learners onto WEA courses,
so that everyone is clear about the service we offer. |
Men and Women of Letters
The Great Ayrton WEA Branch has turned its attention to the letters and diaries
of an interesting local figure, Gertrude Bell, in its class on ‘Local
Writers’. Gertrude Bell was born and brought up locally and is attracting
notice again for her part in the formation of the present-day Iraq. The Branch
have been helped in their research by finding the Newcastle University on-line
archive, containing Gertrude Bell’s letters and diaries. |
